Through education and awareness, Health Takes The Lead aims to help those in the community live healthier and happier lives.

Our Beginning

In her freshman year of high school, founder Darielle Engilman became frustrated with what she saw in the community. Obesity rates in the impoverished areas of Los Angeles were still high, and not much was being done about it. Having lost her grandmother to the obesity epidemic, she decided to do something to prevent that from occurring to others. Seeing that obesity is prevalent in underserved communities, she decided to change that through education and knowledge.

Our Goal

According to the 2015 LA County Health Survey on obesity and weight, families living at 0-99% of the Federal Poverty Level face the highest obesity rate than any others. To combat this issue, Health Takes The Lead aims to reduce these obesity rates and promote healthy living among low-income families through free nutritional counseling.

11.5%

of families living at 0-99% of the Federal Poverty Level report eating their daily 5 servings of fruit/vegetables; this is way too low!

43%

of families living at 0-99% of the Federal Poverty Level report having difficulty accessing medical care; this is way too high.

29.4%

of people living at 0-99% of the Federal Poverty Level are obese; the highest percentage out of any other level.

All information gathered from 2015 LA County Health Surveys.
